Capt. Jack Maher
Jack was born and raised in Northern Virginia and grew up sailing and boating on the Potomac River and Chesapeake bay. He always knew that a “traditional” or “regular” lifestyle wasn´t for him. In 2015, after graduating high school, he decided to turn his love and passion for the water into a career and signed on as crew to a traditional sailing ship and took a voyage across the ocean that changed his life forever. He completed his captains license course in 2018 and moved to Key West, Florida the following year to further pursue his career in the maritime industry. Over the past 4 years he has captained multiple modern and classic sailing yachts, traveling up and down the east coast of the U.S. and to the Caribbean. Outside of chartering, he spends his time windsurfing, cycling, and doing yoga. Jack is passionate about creating memorable charter experiences through sailing, water sports, snorkeling and hiking.
Chef Sidney Anderson
Sidney grew up in a very small town in Minnesota. She came from humble upbringings, eating whatever they could afford. Her memories of cooking started before she could see the counter top, knowing that if you wanted to spend time with the family, you did it in the kitchen. She and her dad would experiment and make whatever they could. Recipes were only suggestions and there were no such thing as mistakes. After her dads garden started growing she learned the real value of fresh food, sparking even more interest. When she was in high school, she´d ditch a lot with friends, only to end up in the kitchen where she would make them a delicious meal. From the start, Sidney has paved her own path without many rules or guidelines. Her ability to problem solve and go beyond the conventional box of modern day “shoulds and shouldn´ts” as given her the creative freedom to “measure with her heart” and make mistakes that turn into her next “I don´t know, but it´s good” meal. When Sidney turned 19, she left Minnesota and moved to many different places to discover the world beyond what little she knew. Along the way she found sailing, this became another passion. After 5 years she now has her 100 ton masters license and over 10,000 offshore nautical miles. During one of her past deliveries on an 80ft traditionally rigged wooden sail boat, the cook fell through. She couldn´t bear seeing everyone struggle to feed themselves daily and stepped in to do both her job as deckhand and cook. In a leaky galley with a half broken stove she successfully feed her hungry crew of tall ship sailors then would head on deck to start her watch. This experience transitioned over into some high end charters on the same wood yacht from 1939. Today she is excited and proud to say she can make a living doing not one but two of her many passions, while grounding herself in the mentality that making food is fun, sailing is fun, and life should be fun too, no matter what ingredients you have in your pantry

La Speranza Guest Reviews
May 2023
Captain Jack and Chef Sidney, thank you both for the trip of a lifetime! I know we mentioned this before, but we were a little nervous about this trip from past experiences, but it really has exceeded our expectations in every possible way. We have probably never enjoyed ourselves this much on a vacation, and that is all due to the hard work, focus on detail and generosity, and pure kindness on your parts. Every destination was better than the last. Every meal absolutely blew us away. We really will miss both of “y´all” so much! Thank you both for everything. Love Sarah, Scotty, Caroline, & Luke.

What an incredible trip! We started this voyage not knowing how fantastic captain captain (Jack) and crew (Sid) we would have. You guys have made it wonderful for all of us. Everything was perfect. From the delicious meals, to the water sports, to the beautiful views, and all the laughs. It was an amazing trip. I would give you guys a 5-star review any day of the week! Thank you for being so accommodating, and making this trip so memorable. Hope to see you guys again, stay safe. Best, Trent.

Sad to leave! Scott and I really enjoyed sailing around the BVI. It was a very relaxing way for the second leg of our vacation. Truly we were stuffed the entire trip from all the good meals. Sid made and not wanting to miss any. From the first day with our stop at Indian Caves for snorkeling til the last day hanging out in the giant claim floatie off of Jost Van Dyke it´s been an adventure. It´s hard to choose a favorite memory but I´d say it was eating the monster lobster in Anegada and swimming wit the three sea turtles off of Jost Can Dyke. Hard to pick, but my favorite meal was definitely the fish cakes with peanut noodles. YUM! Scott´s favorite memory was jumping off of the cut. Thank you for the wonderful memories!

Hi Jack and Sidney,
Thank you very much for your email and lovely photos. We had an absolutely brilliant time with you and were very sad when it came to an end. Thank you so much for looking after us so magnificently - it was a huge amount of work for you both and we really appreciated it. Sidney, the food you prepared for us for was truly wonderful and we loved every meal. Arranging and preparing it all out at sea was a huge undertaking and it all came together absolutely perfectly.
We so appreciated having everything taken care of by you guys so we could totally relax and enjoy spending every moment with ‘baby’ Harry (we’ll be calling him that when he’s 40). Exploring the ruins in the jungle, cavorting around on perfect beaches, swimming with turtles (and that friendly shark), and messing around on the lily-pad/leaping off the boat - these are the stuff of childhood memories and exactly what we wanted from this trip. Great itinerary guys! Thank you also for Harry’s presents (very sweet of you) and for making such a fuss of him. It really did feel as if we were amongst family.
Keep in touch, and we do very much hope to see you both again - here, there, or somewhere in between. The guest barn awaits!
Big hugs,
Mark, Sally and Harry x

We were very pleased with everything associated with our charter, the crew, the boat and the destination.
1.Crew Friendliness: Both Sid and Jack were personable and we got to know them well over the course of our 7 day charter. Jack, answered my countless questions about the boat and sailing and Sid was always ready to help no matter what it was.
2. Crew knowledge: We found the crew very knowledgeable on our destination, the US Virgin Islands, all the sights, attractions and best mooring spots. Sid and Jack were well versed on the operation of the boat and worked well as a team in all phases of its operational.
3.Quality of service: Everything was topnotch, Lisa and I frequently would say ´we were so glad that we selected to do a charter.
4. Professionalism of crew: It was clear that Sid and Jack enjoyed what they do and it showed in the their professionalism and personable level of service they provided.
5.Value of cost of charter: We feel that doing the charter was a great value. We originally were going to get a hotel, rent a car and tour around by ourselves. But because of the logistics around doing this we considered a charter. We did not select the charter initially because of value but for convenience. In the end Lisa and I both felt the charter was a great value, when factoring in lodging, food, transportation, fuel, sightseeing and the overall fun factor.
6. On-Board Cuisine: We had almost all of our meals On-Board. All of the meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner were different offering great variety. The meals were well prepared, tasty and artfully presented. Lisa has a salt-free diet restrictions and Sid did a great job in the meal preparation to accommodate this.
7.Destination/Location: The main initiative to visit the US VI was to see the National Park on St John Island. They positioned the boat so that we were able to see everything in the park we wanted to see. Also we were able to coordinate doing the reef trail hike, in the down hill direction, and having the boat pick us up off the beach after the hike.
8.Water Sports: Our main water sport was snorkeling and we did it everyday some days at several locations. We also sailed to St Croix and back which was a fantastic experience we will not forget.
9.Overall satisfaction: Both Lisa and I loved everything about the charter, our biggest issue is that we can´t wait to do it again in other interesting destinations.
Thanks to everyone,-Lisa and Lothar”
